Gardeners Urged to Cover Plants with Frost Fleece in Heatwaves

Gardening expert Ish has revealed an unexpected yet effective method for protecting potted plants during a heatwave: using frost fleece. In a TikTok video, Ish explained that this lightweight, breathable material, typically used to shield plants from cold, can also reflect sunlight and keep plants cool in scorching temperatures.

How Frost Fleece Works in Heat

Frost fleece, also known as horticultural fleece, is a spun-bound fabric that allows sunlight to filter through while deflecting UV rays. Its pale color helps reflect the sun's rays, and it retains moisture in the soil, reducing crispy leaves. Ish noted, "The most unlikely thing you could ever imagine is actually the most protective thing for your plants during a heatwave."

Application Tips

For potted plants, gardeners can lay a length of fleece across the soil or wrap the entire plant for taller specimens like Japanese maples. The fleece is thin enough to allow water to penetrate during watering. Ish added, "It just goes to show, sometimes when you're trying to protect your plants, the most uncommon thing is usually the best."
