Gardening Expert Reveals Boiling Water as Effective Weedkiller
Boiling Water: Simple Weedkiller That Works in 24 Hours

Simon Akeroyd, a gardening expert and author of several horticultural books, has shared a simple method for eliminating stubborn weeds that he claims works even on those that are 'impossible' to dig out on patios, driveways, and gravel surfaces. In a video, Akeroyd demonstrated that boiling water, not vinegar or harsh chemicals, is the key to effective weed control.

Why Boiling Water Works Better Than Vinegar

Akeroyd explained that many gardeners recommend vinegar and other liquids, but these often fail to reach the root. 'They might destroy the leaves but usually the root survives and sends up new shoots,' he said. In contrast, boiling water typically destroys the entire weed. 'If it does manage to come back again it will be much weaker, and a quick second or third dose with boiling water will finish it off,' he added.

How to Apply Boiling Water Safely

In the video, Akeroyd carefully poured boiling water directly from a kettle onto a troublesome weed. He advised holding the kettle close to the plant to avoid splashing and warned against using this method near plants you wish to keep. 'Only isolated weeds on the patio,' he emphasized. Most weeds die within 24 hours, he noted, pointing to a shriveled weed as proof.

Eco-Friendly Alternative to Chemicals

The method has been praised as an eco-friendly alternative to toxic herbicides like glyphosate. One TikTok user commented, 'Rather than spreading toxic glyphosate and killing every living thing nearby, simple boiling water is more eco-friendly!' Another user shared, 'My wife has been doing this for years, so easy and non-toxic.' Akeroyd also suggested that some weeds can be left to flower, as they provide food for pollinators and wildlife.

The video received widespread appreciation, with users noting the timing and simplicity of the advice. Akeroyd's demonstration offers a practical, chemical-free solution for gardeners dealing with persistent weeds in hard-to-reach areas.
