Gardening expert Simon Akeroyd has shared the 'simplest' way to destroy patio weeds, claiming his method is also effective on those that are 'impossible' to remove due to their position. In a TikTok video, Akeroyd, author of numerous horticultural books, demonstrated how boiling water can eliminate weeds growing through concrete or gravel.
Boiling Water vs. Vinegar and Chemicals
Akeroyd pointed out that while some gardeners recommend vinegar and other aggressive liquids or chemicals, water can be just as effective. 'Boiling water is a solution! Literally,' he declared. He explained that many suggested liquids, such as vinegar, only destroy the leaves, leaving the root to survive and send up new shoots. In contrast, boiling water usually kills the entire weed.
How to Apply Boiling Water
Akeroyd advised carefully pouring boiling water directly from a kettle onto the weed, holding the kettle close to the plant to avoid splashing. 'Most weeds will be dead within 24 hours,' he said, pointing to a shriveled weed as an example. He warned against using this method near desired plants and recommended applying it only to isolated weeds on the patio.
Persistence and Eco-Friendliness
If the weed returns, Akeroyd noted it will be much weaker, and a second or third dose of boiling water will finish it off. This method is eco-friendly, avoiding toxic glyphosate that can harm nearby plants and wildlife. One TikTok user praised: 'Rather than spreading toxic glyphosate and killing every living thing nearby, simple boiling water is more ecofriendly!' Another added: 'My wife has been doing this for years, so easy and non-toxic.'
Weeds Can Be Beneficial
Akeroyd also reminded viewers that not all weeds need to be killed. 'I actually like many of the weeds and very often they provide flowers which are good for wildlife and attract pollinators. So don’t feel you have to kill all your weeds,' he said. A grateful user commented: 'Your timing is impeccable as I just happen to have unsightly weeds growing up in my driveway joints. Thanks. I will give it a try.'
