Asda Launches Yellow Watermelon: The Honey-Flavored Fruit of Summer
Asda Launches Yellow Watermelon: Honey-Flavored Summer Fruit

Asda has launched a new ready-to-eat fruit snack: slices of yellow watermelon, which the retailer describes as tasting 'typically sweeter and milder than red watermelon' with 'tropical notes' and a honey-like flavor. Priced at £2.25 for a 300g tub, the Asda Exceptional Yellow Watermelon Fans are available now, perfect for picnics and counting as one of your five a day.

What Is Yellow Watermelon?

Yellow watermelons are identical on the outside to traditional red watermelons, with the same striped green rind. However, inside they reveal a bright golden centre. Unlike red watermelons, which get their colour from the antioxidant lycopene, yellow watermelons lack lycopene and thus remain yellow. According to Asda, they are 'almost identical to a traditional watermelon on the outside.'

Yellow watermelons are not a new invention; they actually predate red watermelons. Thought to have first grown in Africa about 5,000 years ago, they are naturally occurring. The red watermelon developed later through centuries of cross-breeding for texture, colour, and sweetness. Like their red counterparts, yellow watermelons have a high water content of 92%, giving them a crumbly texture, but they tend to be sweeter and more honey-like. Both seeded and seedless varieties are available due to cross-breeding, and they are rich in vitamins A and C.

Availability and Rarity

While Asda is promoting this as a summer launch, there is no mention of limited-time availability. However, yellow watermelon is a seasonal fruit, typically only available in warmer months. It is also relatively rare, found in only a small number of countries such as Thailand and Nigeria, so only a limited run may be possible.

Online Reactions

The yellow watermelon fan club is alive and well online, with many praising the fruit. On TikTok, user @hagrid.1mill0n0 said they are 'so much better than a red watermelon I found it tender.' @oliviaquattromani added, 'Yellow watermelon is so much better! love it.' @brenda_asfk commented, 'It tastes richer,' while @kaykayrice noted, 'I always felt that yellow watermelon was juicier and sweeter than regular watermelon.'

Nutritional Benefits

Like red watermelon, yellow watermelon is hydrating and nutrient-dense. It counts as one of your five a day and is a good source of vitamins A and C, which support immune function and skin health.
