As summer temperatures rise across the UK, rodent infestations surge, with rats infiltrating homes and gardens. Experts recommend a 20p kitchen staple—onions—as a safe, natural repellent that deters these disease-carrying pests without toxic chemicals.
Why Onions Work Against Rats
According to Better Homes & Gardens, rats detest the smell of onions and garlic. Placing fresh onion slices or crushed garlic in corners where rats might enter can effectively repel them. Pest control expert Jordan Foster of Fantastic Pest Control confirms: "Once they smell it, they'll run." He suggests growing onions in gardens or placing them at common entry points, and even making beds with onions, garlic, and leeks to keep rodents away.
Onions are inexpensive—priced at just 20p each at Tesco—making them a budget-friendly solution. However, caution is needed for pet owners, as onions and garlic are toxic to dogs. Additionally, onions must be replaced regularly to avoid spoilage.
Natural Homemade Rat-Repelling Mixture
The Times of India (TOI) shares a chemical-free recipe using onions and common kitchen ingredients. To make the mixture, combine one medium onion (sliced), one teaspoon red chilli powder, 12-15 black peppercorns (ground), one teaspoon baking soda, one teaspoon gram flour, juice of half a lemon, and a little sugar. Add water to form a paste, spread it over onion slices, and sprinkle sugar on top. The sugar attracts rats, while the spicy ingredients drive them away.
Wrap the prepared onion pieces in paper and place them in corners, storage spaces, cupboards, or behind doors. Dispose of them after a couple of days for hygiene. TOI states this method is "completely non-toxic and safe for pets and humans, yet highly effective at discouraging rats from entering your home."
