Two Welsh football clubs are joining forces to host the Lilly Jones Memorial Cup, a special event honouring 14-year-old suspected murder victim Lilly Jones, with all proceeds donated to her family.
Background of the Tragedy
Lilly Jones, a pupil at Brynmawr Foundation School from Blaina, was reported missing last Saturday. On Monday, a body was discovered in the Duffryn Park area shortly after 10pm. Police have stated that while formal identification has not yet taken place, Lilly's family has been informed and is receiving support.
A 14-year-old boy appeared at Newport Magistrates' Court on Friday charged with murder in connection with the discovery.
Memorial Cup Event Details
The Lilly Jones Memorial Cup will take place on Saturday, July 18, at Beaufort Colts FC's Hilltop Stadium. The day includes a football match between Beaufort Colts and Nantyglo FC, along with other activities scheduled from 1pm to 6pm. Food vendors and a bar will be on site, with hopes for additional entertainment to make the event as special as possible for attendees.
Beaufort Colts FC stated on social media: "The event is about more than football. It's about community, compassion, and showing that when one family hurts, we all stand together. We want to give friends, families, and supporters the opportunity to come together, remember Lilly, and create positive memories in her honour."
Fundraising and Legacy
All money raised through collections and competitions on the day will be donated directly to Lilly's family. The club encouraged attendees to bring cash and support fundraising activities. Beaufort Colts FC also announced that the Lilly Jones Memorial Cup will become an annual event, ensuring Lilly's memory lives on and her legacy continues to bring people together.
The club added: "No amount of money can ease the pain of losing a loved one, but together we can show Lilly's family that they are not alone. Let's fill the ground, stand together as one community, and make this a day worthy of Lilly's memory."
The club thanked Jo Bevans for liaising with Lilly's family, Nantyglo FC for participating, and the Abertillery Belles for helping to organise fundraising activities.
