Todd Grimshaw and Summer Spellman are set to leave Coronation Street for Thailand, following the traumatic aftermath of Theo Silverton's murder. The pair have endured months of abuse and suspicion, but now with Sarah Platt revealed as the true killer, they see a chance to start anew.
Abuse and Murder: The Backstory
Todd was subjected to vicious physical attacks, gaslighting, coercive control, financial abuse, and sexual assault by his abusive partner Theo. Summer, Todd's best friend and adoptive daughter of Billy Mayhew, also suffered. Billy died in a minibus fire set by Theo out of jealousy. Summer grew suspicious and risked her life to prove Theo's guilt.
On the night of Theo's murder, Todd was supposed to fly to Thailand to visit his mother Eileen and brother Jason. But Theo confronted him, leading to a deadly game of cat and mouse. Theo also threatened Summer with the line 'I guess Summer had to end some time.' However, Theo fell from scaffolding to his death, later revealed to be caused by Sarah Platt.
Suspicion and Arrest
Todd was a prime suspect due to his history with Theo. Theo's ex-wife Danielle publicly accused Todd of murder for life insurance money. Summer also faced suspicion; her diary contained fantasies of holding a gun to Theo's head, and she planned to study abroad, which looked like fleeing. She was arrested but later freed after Tyrone Dobbs testified he saw her fleeing Theo that night.
Facing jail, Summer spiraled and switched off her insulin pump, a potentially fatal act for a diabetic. Tyrone eventually did the right thing, clearing her name.
Plans for Thailand
Now cleared, Todd plans to take the delayed trip to Thailand with Summer. But Christina, George Shuttleworth's partner, has been spending recklessly and hiding it from George. Todd considers giving them Theo's life insurance money to ease their financial crisis.
In upcoming scenes, Todd confides in Summer that Christina is still spending secretly. Summer warns of disaster. Todd tells James he plans to give away the insurance money. Christina tells George their luck will change when Todd shares the money, but she may have jumped the gun.
At the Rovers, Todd and Summer announce their flights to Thailand for tomorrow. Christina and George react to the news, given their financial troubles. Todd may change his plans and give them the money as a heartfelt gesture.
