Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has finally broken his silence on the real reason Kevin Costner departed the hugely popular series, speaking candidly about the split in a rare interview. Costner fronted the show for four and a half seasons before his exit was confirmed in May 2023.
The Hollywood heavyweight portrayed ranch owner and later Governor of Montana in the beloved Western drama, which charts the fortunes of a powerful cattle-ranching dynasty who resort to violence and intimidation to maintain their grip on some of the most coveted land in the state.
Also featuring Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley and Luke Grimes, the series has spawned several equally triumphant spin-offs, including Dutton Ranch, with Reilly and Hauser reprising their roles as John's daughter Beth and her husband Rip. The spin-off wrapped up its debut season this Friday (June 3).
Sheridan's Bombshell Revelation
Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan opened up at length following the departure of Yellowstone's leading man. He also dropped the bombshell that Costner was originally only contracted to appear in the first three seasons, before negotiations led to an extension, reports the Express.
"That was in his contract," he explained. "In my mind, that's when his youngest son takes over [on the show]... But the network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready."
"He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do but he stayed on for another two seasons."
Costner's Post-Yellowstone Venture
Shortly after his exit, Costner wasted no time launching into his own Western venture, the bold four-part cinematic epic Horizon: An American Saga. Unfortunately, the first instalment bombed at the box office, leaving the completed second film without a wide release and stalling production on the remaining two chapters indefinitely.
Sheridan revealed that losing Costner entirely was viewed as an enormous gamble for the Paramount Network, explaining: "The notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network."
Rival cable networks were also circling, Sheridan continued, heaping pressure on Paramount to commission Yellowstone for a specific number of seasons. "That's the power of a really big hit show," he notes. Eventually, Costner "hit a point" where the time had come to "do [his] own thing".
Original Three-Season Plan
"But we originally conceived it together that it was three seasons and then the baton is handed. ... Because we had to tread water for a bit there. I think it was pretty evident," he concluded.
Sheridan ultimately achieved his ambition with John Dutton's youngest son, Kayce (Grimes), currently fronting his own spin-off, Marshals, which is set to return for a second season later this year.
