Sam Workman Breaks Silence on 'Gross' Comment Backlash

Sam Workman, a recently eliminated Love Island contestant, has broken his silence regarding a comment that sparked significant backlash among viewers. The remark, deemed "gross" and "disrespectful" by fans, occurred when Sam kissed Victoria on the terrace and subsequently told Namibia he wished he had kissed her instead.

Context of the Controversy

The drama unfolded as Sam and Namibia were eliminated from the villa after new arrivals Halle and Chidi were also dumped. The four newcomers were tasked with stealing partners, leaving Sam and Namibia single and ultimately sent home. During his time on the show, Sam faced criticism for his comment to Namibia, which many viewers found disrespectful.

One fan wrote on X: "Sam is just disrespectful the way he talked about Victoria to Namibia. No one forced you to kiss her." Another added: "They were all babying Sam for no reason. He's moving mad... did he not tell Namibia that he wished he kissed her instead of Victoria and now he saying he always wanted to kiss Victoria." A third commented: "Mind u after the kiss sam and victoria had at the terrace he said to the boys that he kissed her bcos she was being flirty and not bcos he liked her that and wanted to go with namibia. now she's done the same thing to namibia. sam is playing a big game." A fourth viewer said: "Err sorry felt bad for Sam before but cannot back that. Gross behaviour."

Sam's Clarification on The Debrief

Appearing on Love Island's The Debrief vodcast, Sam addressed the incident directly. He explained to hosts Toni, Yas, and Shakira: "I want to clear this up a little bit, so I kissed Victoria on the terrace and then I came down and told Namibia that I'd rather have kissed her instead." Toni responded, "We were mad at you for that one," to which Sam elaborated: "I understand, but what you didn't see is all of the lads came over and Ope told me 'oh she's just said the exact same thing to me as she said to you, she's asked me to go to the terrace first.' So then I came down and thought oh I'm not interested now, she's just playing me."

Namibia jokingly interjected, "So was that true or not... don't be using me in your little games." Sam added: "It turned out it was all a bit of miscommunication. I did say it and it's probably wrong to say, but it wasn't as bad as it looks I don't think." Host Shakira admitted she was "mad" at him following the comments, and Yas agreed she thought the boys were "corrupting him."

Impact and Aftermath

The incident highlights the intense scrutiny Love Island contestants face over their actions in the villa. According to reports, Sam's comment triggered a wave of criticism on social media, with fans calling out his behavior. However, Sam maintains that the full context was not shown, and the situation was a result of miscommunication. Love Island airs Sunday to Friday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
