Newcastle Theatre Royal Tours: Behind the Scenes and Secret Spaces
Newcastle Theatre Royal Tours Offer Behind-the-Scenes Access

Newcastle's Theatre Royal, reportedly the favorite theatre of acting legend Sir Ian McKellen, is offering the public a rare opportunity to see it from his perspective this summer. Behind-the-scenes tours will allow visitors to explore areas normally off-limits, including backstage and the view from the stage over the stunning auditorium.

For many theatregoers accustomed to seeing the stage from their seats, this will be their first chance to look in the opposite direction and experience the performers' viewpoint. The ornate auditorium, with its rich reds and golds, is a sight to behold. Sir Ian, who has performed at the theatre over a seven-decade career, is said to love acting there. He first appeared on its stage in 1969 and more recently performed alongside Sir Patrick Stewart in Waiting For Godot and No Man's Land.

The theatre invites visitors to "step beyond the curtain and discover the magic that brings performances to life," adding that the exclusive tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the hidden world of theatre.

Tour bookers can enjoy 10% off a hot or soft drink in the theatre's cafe-bar, The Green Room, after the tour.

Schedule and Booking

Upcoming tours are scheduled for Saturday mornings on June 27, July 25, August 29, and September 26. Time slots are available at 10am and 10.30am, limited to just 20 people per session, so early booking is recommended. Children aged 10 and over are welcome with adult supervision.

The theatre notes that the route includes multiple staircases, making it unsuitable for those with mobility issues. Large bags are not allowed due to space constraints. Sensible footwear is advised; open-toe shoes and heels are not permitted on the stage, though stage access is not guaranteed as it depends on visiting show requirements. To book, visit the Theatre Royal website.
