Netflix has released a chilling first trailer for one of its most anticipated films of 2026, 'The Last House,' and viewers are already captivated—and some say 'triggered'—by its familiar premise.
A Family Trapped by a Supernatural Force
Starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, this essential thriller centers on a family of four who find themselves suddenly and inexplicably confined within their home with no means of escape. As torrential rain falls ceaselessly outside, they grow suspicious that a supernatural force is imprisoning them, their neighbors, and possibly the entire globe. Days and weeks stretch into months and years as the family adjusts to their peculiar new existence.
But what lies beyond their sealed doors and self-mending windows? And will they ever break free to discover what's truly been unfolding?
Director and Stars Weigh In
Director Louis Leterrier ('Now You See Me,' 'Lupin') reveals to Netflix's Tudum: 'Food is dwindling, and this family has to rely on each other and try to understand what comes next. What's locking them in, and how will they survive?'
Actress Lee comments: 'Growing up, my favourite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist. So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.'
Alongside Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Lee and Academy Award nominee Moura, who play parents Ann and Jason, are Riley Chung and Noah Alexander Sosnowski as their children Ruth and Graham. As the narrative unfolds and the family endures prolonged confinement, Emma Ho and Gabriel Barbosa assume these roles.
Fan Reactions: Excitement and Unease
Since the trailer's release on Monday (15th June), it has rapidly amassed millions of views from enthusiastic Netflix subscribers who have immediately added the film to the top of their must-watch lists.
'This looks VERY interesting. It's got my attention, alright!' one fan commented beneath the trailer on YouTube. Another user remarked: 'I've never been so excited for a new Netflix movie in years.' Someone else posted on X: 'This looks insanely tense. Greta Lee + Wagner Moura trapped in a house? I'm locked in already.'
Nevertheless, some viewers have expressed concerns that 'The Last House' might feel uncomfortably familiar for those who lived through the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020-21. 'I was quarantined for 3 years during Covid. This is triggering,' a YouTube user commented. 'I'm very curious on how this movie goes.' Another viewer remarked: 'Netflix said "what if 2020 but make it a thriller" and honestly we deserve this.'
'The Last House' premieres 7th August on Netflix.
