Mum's Two-Ingredient Hack for a Tastier Cheese and Onion Sandwich

A mum has revealed a simple two-ingredient addition that transforms a classic cheese and onion sandwich into a more flavorful meal. Alyna, posting on TikTok, says she has become "obsessed" with her version, which adds chopped spring onions and mayonnaise to the traditional combination of grated Red Leicester and finely-chopped red onion.

How to Make the Sandwich

Alyna instructs: "Mix everything together [in a bowl]." She seasons the mixture with salt and pepper, then spreads it onto seeded bread, noting that the generous helping of mayonnaise eliminates the need for butter. "Enjoy! So simple and tastes delicious," she exclaims.

Alyna credits fellow TikTok mum Cook, Bake, Make for inspiration, who described the ingredients as a "super simple but delicious combination" in her own clip.

Followers responded enthusiastically. One gushed: "This turned out perfectly." Another declared: "This looks amazing!" A third asked about seasoning amounts, to which Alyna advised: "Just a pinch. The cheese and mayo makes it quite salty already."

Alternative Twist for Tuna Sandwiches

For those who prefer tuna, foodie Yumna Jawad suggests swapping mayonnaise for Greek yoghurt. "I use Greek yoghurt rather than mayonnaise to make this wonderfully creamy," she said. "Greek yoghurt is also a great source of protein and probiotics and it is luxuriously thick and velvety, meaning it provides the same satisfying texture as mayonnaise in a considerably healthier way."

Yumna explains that mayonnaise can overwhelm tuna's flavour, while Greek yoghurt adds a subtle, tangy quality. It also contains fewer calories and unhealthy fats, making for a more nutritious meal. She added: "This healthy tuna salad is full of flavour, light on calories and super easy to whip up for lunch any day of the week! Swap the mayo for Greek yoghurt and Dijon mustard and save those calories for a treat later."
