Moulin Rouge! The Musical has opened at the Liverpool Empire Theatre, marking the first-ever world tour stop in Liverpool. The award-winning stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film will run from Thursday, July 2 to Saturday, August 6, 2026.
Behind the Scenes of the Spectacular Production
Set in Paris in 1899, the musical follows the love story between Christian, a struggling American writer, and Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their romance faces obstacles from Harold Zidler, the nightclub's host, and The Duke of Monroth, a wealthy patron who seeks to buy Satine. With his Bohemian friends, Christian creates a theatrical production to save the Moulin Rouge and win Satine's heart.
The production features over 70 iconic songs, blending classics from the film with recent hits released since the movie premiered more than 20 years ago. Audiences can expect a spectacular set and more than 300 costumes, with an estimated 150,000 crystals used per performance. Approximately 20,000 crystals adorn each costume for the character Satine alone.
First Look at Costumes and Set Design
Images released by the Liverpool Echo provide a first look behind the scenes, showcasing the detailed set designs, including a replica of the Eiffel Tower, and elaborate costumes. Assistant stage manager Andrew Swarbrigg is seen working hard backstage. The attention to detail in the costumes, from sparkling dresses to a standout coat, has drawn praise.
