Apple TV shows have been dominating streaming platforms recently, with hits like Margo's Got Money Troubles and Widow's Bay earning critical acclaim. However, one series stands out as criminally overlooked: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. This comedy-thriller has received glowing reviews, particularly for Tatiana Maslany's performance, yet it flies under the radar.
A Modern Take on Rear Window
Showrunner David J Rosen drew inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window. The story follows Paula (Tatiana Maslany), a single mother entangled in a stressful custody battle while working as an underappreciated fact checker. She finds solace in online chats with Trevor (Brandon Flynn), a webcam boy. Their arrangement—sharing intimate moments and video sex—takes a dark turn when Paula witnesses Trevor being attacked and kidnapped during a call.
When police investigate, they reveal that Trevor was actually scamming Paula and the attack was staged. But this is only the beginning. Paula plunges into the underground world of organized crime, uncovering deeper horrors as she digs further.
Handling Sex Work with Care
Brandon Flynn, known for 13 Reasons Why, emphasized that the show doesn't cast a judgmental eye on sex work. 'I think it handles it with a delicate hand,' he said. 'It doesn't point to it as bad or good. It just says, you can understand why someone does this work, what they benefit, and what a client benefits. Ultimately, we're telling a story about one scam, not the whole industry.'
Showrunner David Rosen added, 'Consenting adults figure their way out. Our situation is a one-off scam. Most people are safe online with sex workers, but we had a specific story to tell.'
Tatiana Maslany Shines
At 40, Maslany delivers a standout performance, balancing humor and high stakes effortlessly. Known for Orphan Black, The Woman in Gold, and She-Hulk, she anchors the series. Co-star Murray, who plays Frank, Trevor's secretive older lover, praised her: 'She's singular and extraordinary. The show straddles comedy and shadowy stuff, and she jumps between them seamlessly, anchored in honesty and freshness.'
Jake Johnson in a New Light
Fans may be surprised to see Jake Johnson, best known as Nick Miller from New Girl, in a dramatic role. He plays Karl, Paula's ex-husband with a mean streak in the custody battle. Johnson said, 'I never think about strategy. I take each job as it comes. It's fun when people get shocked, but I view projects like chapters of a book.'
A Unique Blend of Genres
Director David Gordon Green, known for Halloween Ends and Pineapple Express, explained the show's appeal: 'You get tropes from genre thrillers and add a human, domestic quality—relatable parenthood, community—then top it with humor and wit. It keeps perspective under heightened circumstances.'
With six of ten episodes currently available on Apple TV, and the finale airing July 15, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed offers a binge-worthy experience with unpredictable twists. As Metro's four-star review noted, 'Tatiana Maslany's sickening new TV thriller will hook you from the start.'
