Keeley Hawes, known for her roles in BBC dramas such as Spooks and Upstairs Downstairs, has had a love life marked by a high-profile divorce and a famous husband. The 50-year-old actress currently stars in Upstairs Downstairs, which has entered the UK Top 10 on Netflix.
First Marriage to Spencer McCallum
Hawes married cartoonist Spencer McCallum in December 2001 after a four-year relationship. They have a son named Myles. However, the marriage ended when she left their Surrey home, with speculation linking her departure to her future husband, Matthew Macfadyen.
In an interview with Night & Day magazine, Hawes said: 'The most painful thing was that Spencer and I were such good friends. I was in my early twenties when I met him. We were best, best friends, then the lines got blurred. We had Myles, and getting married seemed like the natural thing to do.'
She denied any affair with Macfadyen, stating: 'When I decided to leave my husband, nothing had happened between Matthew and me. I'm sure nobody would believe we never had an affair, but we really didn't. It wasn't love at first sight. It was a slow burn.'
Hawes maintains a good relationship with McCallum and his family, telling The Standard: 'Spencer's parents have been phenomenal with my children. And Spencer is a great friend of my family now. We're all grown-ups.'
Marriage to Matthew Macfadyen
Hawes married Matthew Macfadyen in November 2004 at Richmond-upon-Thames register office while seven months pregnant. The couple have a son and a daughter together. Macfadyen, 51, is famous for playing Mr Darcy in the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice and for his roles in Succession and Spooks.
Hawes recalled the early days of their romance: 'Matthew just came straight out with it and said, 'I love you,' in the rain one day. I thought, 'Oh dear, here we go.''
She praised his acting: 'I think he is absolutely brilliant in Pride & Prejudice and it's very difficult to judge your own partner, I find it almost impossible. But I watch that and I think he's such a brilliant, generous actor to work with - and to watch. He's really wonderful.'
Upstairs Downstairs is available to stream on Netflix.
