The BBC's latest drama I, Jack Wright, a six-part whodunit penned by Chris Lang of Unforgotten fame, features a stellar cast including Nikki-Amuka Bird, John Simm, Daniel Rigby, Ruby Ashbourne-Serkis, and Zoë Tapper. The series, which debuted in April 2025 on U&Alibi, has been acquired by the BBC, with series one set to air on BBC One and iPlayer, and series two already in production.

Plot and Reception

Described as a "propulsive whodunnit" centered on family secrets, the synopsis reads: "The apparent death by suicide of high-powered businessman Jack Wright sends shockwaves through his family, leaving a mystery that pits greed, loyalty and suspicion against one another. As his many wives and children fight over the remains of his estate, a dogged police detective investigates – and uncovers the shocking truth about this well-heeled clan."

Filming Locations

The drama was predominantly shot in and around Greater London. The principal family residence of Marston House was filmed at the Mansion House in North Mymms Park, Hertfordshire. Additional Hertfordshire locations include Bovingdon Airfield and Gadebridge Park in Hemel Hempstead. Scenes were also captured in Hackney, Russell Square, Aylesbury Crown Court, and Old Deer Park in Richmond.

Studio and Key Scenes

Numerous powerful sequences were filmed at the studio, including the reading of Jack's Will at the conclusion of episode one. Writer Chris Lang explained: "I always knew it had to come at the end of episode one because it brings all the key characters together and marks the point where the main story begins. It's a highly stylised scene that uses a range of visual devices, including freeze frames, voiceovers and flash-forwards. The sequence is complex because it reveals the characters' psychology from multiple perspectives, showing how they feel in the moment and how those feelings evolve two years later. Ultimately, that's what the series is about: understanding the psychology of people raised within a family led by a deeply toxic man."
