Otto Hightower's Fate Revealed in Shocking Execution
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 delivered a stunning twist as Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) was beheaded by Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy). The former Hand of the King had been missing since Season 2, captured by Larys Strong (Matthew Needham).
Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) discovered Otto imprisoned in the Red Keep dungeons after the Blacks seized the Iron Throne. Larys had secretly detained Otto, possibly to curry favor with Rhaenyra. However, Rhaenyra ordered Otto's execution as a public display of authority before the common people and his daughter Alicent (Olivia Cooke).
Larys Strong's Betrayal and Aegon II's Escape
Viewers last saw Otto in Season 2 being abducted during his journey to Highgarden, where Alicent had sent him to secure the Tyrells' allegiance. Larys Strong, Master of Whisperers, had seized and imprisoned him. Larys also secretly removed Aegon II from King's Landing, leaving Rhaenyra to execute Otto in Aegon's place.
Rhaenyra reluctantly carried out the beheading, symbolizing her growing ruthlessness. According to Emma D'Arcy, the scene marked a threshold for the character: "I think there's a threshold that gets crossed in that moment, for better or for worse."
Olivia Cooke Reacts to Her Father's Death
Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, expressed shock at the execution. "She just beheaded my dad. In front of everyone," Cooke told People. "[Alicent] doesn't know where Otto has been, so for all she knows, he's been held prisoner by [Rhaenyra]. This feels like a very public display of this assertion of power. I think Alicent is just like, 'Okay, well, f*** you.'"
Rhaenyra's Descent into Religious Fanaticism
The cast and crew hinted that Rhaenyra's rise to the throne will fuel a "religious fanaticism" and conviction that she is destined to rule according to the Prince That Was Promised prophecy, egged on by Daemon. This parallels her descendant Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and carries grave consequences.
House of the Dragon Season 3 is streaming on Sky Atlantic, NOW, and HBO Max.
