Gaynor Faye, known for her role as Megan Macey on the ITV soap Emmerdale, has disclosed that producers once contemplated a same-sex romance storyline for her character, which ultimately never aired. Speaking to Zingo Bingo, Faye shared that the plot would have involved a relationship between Megan and Harriet Finch, played by Katherine Dow Blyton.
Details of the Scrapped Storyline
Faye explained the concept, saying: "I remember when I was in Emmerdale. There was talk of me, me and another character having a relationship, me and Harriet [Finch]." She emphasized that the storyline was not about a sudden change in sexuality but about falling in love with a person regardless of gender. "In the old-fashioned world, love is love. It's not a case of, suddenly they turned their sexuality. It's a case of you just falling in love with somebody. It would be good to see more storylines like that," she added.
Faye's Time on Emmerdale
Faye first appeared as Megan Macey in 2012 and remained on the show until 2019, when her character departed the village for a new start in Newcastle with her daughter Eliza. During her seven-year tenure, Megan was involved in numerous dramatic storylines, including relationships with Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), as well as her daughter's cerebral palsy diagnosis.
Possibility of Returning to the Dales
When asked about a potential return to Emmerdale, Faye said she hasn't been invited back but remains open to the idea. "I've not been asked to go back, to be honest. I left to go and do some theatre, but it's six years ago now. I was in it for seven [years] and I've been out of it six. I think I'd go back if there was a really good reason," she stated. She noted that her character's connection to Jai, with whom Megan shares a daughter, could provide a plausible entry point. "Obviously it's only really Jai there who was connected to Megan. If ever we needed to mess up Jai a bit, it might be quite fun. Obviously I've got a daughter with Jai, so that's a potential way to go back. Other than that, really, I think it's one of those things I'm always about moving on, but I'd never say never."
Views on Crossover Episodes
Faye also commented on the recent "Corriedale" crossover episode between Emmerdale and Coronation Street, admitting she hadn't watched it but supporting the idea of more crossovers. "I don't really [watch them]. That time for me is usually when I come in, finish work, and have my tea. I'm a Buddhist, so I chant as well at that time. I heard it was very good and there was lots of fallout from that, which was great. I always thought that they should do it. I'm surprised they hadn't done it before, it's only 40 miles down the M62," she said. She added that crossovers don't need to be grand events: "It's such a great idea, so I think they should do more of it. It doesn't have to be a big thing. It could just be one person popping up in Weatherfield, or the other way around, somebody popping up in Houghton village - it doesn't have to be a massive crossover. It's fun."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
