On the July 18 episode of Four in a Bed, a heated payment day erupted between two sets of Powys hotel owners after a guest claimed to find a pubic hair in the bedding. The competition, which included stops in Blackpool, Warwickshire, and Powys, saw three pairs make it to payment day after one host unexpectedly quit.
Cleanliness Dispute Sparks Tension
Karen and Bryan, hosts of Bechan Retreats, faced scrutiny from guests Ying and Jean, who discovered a hair in the bed and hairs in the shower. Ying described the hair as “short and curly” and insisted it was a pubic hair. Karen, however, expressed disbelief, stating the bedding was new linen and the bathroom had been scrubbed. “I’m in disbelief,” Karen said, adding, “I would class our cleaning as excellent.”
As a result of the cleanliness issues, Ying and Jean underpaid Karen and Bryan by £10. Fellow contestants Charlotte and Matt commented, “I think there may be a bit of a war going on between the other two B&Bs regarding cleanliness, let’s hope it doesn’t get too dirty.”
Retaliatory Underpayment
Tensions escalated when Karen and Bryan visited Ying and Jean’s Castle Inn in Powys. They rated the facilities a seven, citing a lack of seating area and bath in the “deluxe suite,” and underpaid by £15. Bryan explained, “It’s marketed as a deluxe suite, we don’t feel as though there was any extra value on the room.”
Jean accused them of retaliation, saying, “I think it was tit for tat when you saw our scoring for your place.” Karen denied this, telling the camera, “I’m quite upset and deflated that Jean thinks it was tit for tat, because that certainly wasn’t what it was.” Ying accepted the payment but remained unhappy, calling it “a bit mean.”
Final Outcome
Due to the underpayments, Ying and Jean’s Castle Inn finished last. Jean remarked, “Somebody’s got to win and somebody’s got to lose but we’ll just carry on as we’ve always done.” Karen and Brian were declared winners, describing their experience as a “rollercoaster.”
