Iconic 90s boyband Five has been announced as the headline act at the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On event on September 4, with 20,000 free tickets available through a public ballot. The band, known for hits such as Keep On Movin' and Everybody Get Up, will perform an hour-long set at the Tower Festival Headland in the shadow of Blackpool Tower, marking the start of the Illuminations season.
Supporting Acts and BBC Collaboration
Five will be supported by rock quintet The Feeling and chart-topping singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan. This year, Blackpool Tourism Limited has collaborated with the BBC, with the evening hosted by BBC Radio Lancashire presenters Graham Liver and Sharon Hartley. As part of the partnership, BBC Radio Lancashire will showcase emerging regional talent through BBC Introducing.
Ticket Ballot Details
The public ballot for the 20,000 free tickets opens on June 30 at 12:00 noon and closes at 5:00 PM on Thursday, August 6. Tickets will be split equally between Blackpool Council residents and visitors. Successful applicants must pay a £5 admin fee per booking. For those who want to guarantee their place, Golden Circle tickets are available for £12 plus a £5 admin fee, with release on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:00 AM.
Statements from Organisers
Kate Shane MBE, Managing Director of Blackpool Tourism Ltd, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Five to headline the Switch-On Concert. Their reunion tour was a sell-out success, showing they have remained a fan favourite. This summer, they have been entertaining huge crowds at some of the biggest festivals in the country.” She added: “Following audience feedback from previous years, we know that people want the opportunity to guarantee their tickets rather than waiting for the outcome of the ballot. We’ve introduced the option to purchase Golden Circle tickets now, so people can start to make their travel and accommodation arrangements.”
Previous Switch-Ons and City of Culture Bid
Last year, Olly Murs switched on the lights, while past years have featured Peter Kay, Tim Burton, and Barbara Windsor. The identity of this year's switch-on guest will be announced in the coming weeks. Councillor Lynn Williams MBE, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “The Switch-On is always a highlight of our year and this line-up promises a fantastic way to start the Illuminations season. It’s yet another powerful example of why Blackpool is a leading contender for City of Culture status. Few places can deliver world-class, free events in such iconic settings and we’re proud to do it year after year.”
