Emmerdale fans believe they have uncovered the true motive behind Serena Sugden's sudden arrival in the village. The newcomer, played by Wicked star Casey Al-Shaqsy, appeared as the long-lost cousin of Jack Sugden and prompted Woolpack landlady Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) to confess to partner Mack about the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Dr Caitlin Todd.
Charity's Ordeal with Dr Todd
Last year, Charity attempted to become a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah, only to discover she was naturally pregnant by Ross Barton. She kept this secret, and Sarah believed the surrogacy had gone to plan. However, Dr Caitlin Todd, who had previously bullied Sarah's partner Jacob at the hospital, learned the truth and blackmailed Charity for money. The situation escalated into harrowing scenes where Dr Todd sexually assaulted a drunken Charity.
In the latest episode, Charity returned to the police after confessing to Mack, but was warned that proving the assault would be difficult. Meanwhile, Serena secured a place to stay in the village after Sarah offered her accommodation during baby Leyla's christening. Mack stormed out of the christening, claiming he could no longer cope, and visited Kev Townsend, who advised him to seek revenge on those who hurt his family.
Fan Theories About Serena
Serena mentioned knowing about Robert Sugden's murderous brother, John Sugden, a notorious serial killer who terrorized the village. Fans have now theorized that Serena is either a true crime podcaster investigating John's crimes or his long-lost daughter.
On Reddit, one fan said: "I think Serena is a true crime podcaster, a little different than usual, nothing sinister but just a little immoral or she thinks John did something to her mum." Another added: "A true crime podcaster would be a good angle. Morally dubious but redeemable as she seems fun, I hope she sticks around."
A third wrote: "I'll be very interested to learn what Serena's deal is... if she is a bad egg, I have a feeling Kev 'Tenacity' Woody Townsend will be the one to reveal it." A fourth begged: "Wtf is Sarah thinking inviting Serena to stay with her and Jacob when she doesn't know her and only has her word that she's Robert's cousin. Serena's a bit too interested in that nutter John so I think she's lying and maybe John was her daddy."
What's Next
As Charity struggles on the edge of a breakdown, her long-lost son Ryan confronted her in the pub, asking, "Why are you acting like I hurt you? What did I do?" She replied, "You were born," before running off crying. Serena followed to check on her but was dismissed. Meanwhile, Mack returned to the hospital to confront Dr Todd, telling her, "Yes there is, Caitlin, and it's not going away."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
