Emmerdale has provided an update on Dr Caitlin Todd that is sure to please fans of the long-running ITV soap. Viewers will be well aware that Caitlin Todd (played by Caroline Harker) spent weeks blackmailing Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) over the true parentage of Leyla Sugden, following her cruel treatment of mentee Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant). Charity's storyline took a deeply troubling turn last month when Dr Todd sexually assaulted her at Jacobs Fold in harrowing scenes. The sinister doctor has since departed the village to take up a new position in Sheffield, while Charity continues to struggle in the wake of the attack.
Police Investigation Progresses
The police investigation into the assault has been progressing slowly, but the latest episode on Thursday (July 16) brought a fresh development. Officers arrived to question Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), who had previously been in a romantic relationship with Todd. DS Reid (Angela Lonsdale) questioned Vanessa about her connection with Todd, before asking: "I know this might be a difficult question, but did Dr Todd ever do anything that made you feel uncomfortable or that you thought was inappropriate in any way?" Vanessa swiftly responded: "No, of course not," prompting DS Reid to confirm that a serious allegation had been made against the doctor.
Charity Opens Up to Vanessa
Shortly afterwards, Vanessa paid Charity a visit, during which Charity disclosed that Todd had sexually assaulted her. "I feel really stupid because I thought I was safe," she admitted, before Vanessa assured: "You're not [stupid]." Charity continued: "I should've been safe. Do you think it's something to do with me? I mean, first [Mark] Bails and now this?" Vanessa replied: "No, it is not your fault. Not then, not now. Oh god, just... I wish I'd seen what she were like." The vet then recalled joining Todd and Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) at the pub on the evening of the assault, and let out an audible gasp upon realising what had happened to Charity just moments earlier.
Fans React Emotional
Viewers were left feeling emotional after watching Charity open up to Vanessa in the latest episode. One X (formerly Twitter) user posted: "These were the scenes I have been waiting for!! Knowing it would have brought the Bails stuff back up for Charity and knowing Vanessa was the one to get her through that, and in a way that Mack just doesn't get! My girls." Another commented: "Thinking about the fact Vanessa would have had no reason whatsoever to link what she was questioned about to Charity, but from seeing Charity for two minutes and recognising her reaction she instantly knew." A third viewer stated: "My Vanity delusion is back in full force!!! I love the way Emmerdale played out Vanessa figuring out that something was wrong with Charity, she's always been able to tell if something's up with her I'm so glad they showed that today." A fourth fan shared similar thoughts: "Vanessa now knowing. I can't wait to see how this unfolds in the friendship and support point of view. Just because Vanessa has seen Charity's lows better than most and knows how to guide her through it."
What Lies Ahead for Dr Todd?
Now that Vanessa is privy to the truth, could she find herself implicated in Todd's forthcoming death? The scheming villain was notably discovered dead in a flash-forward, yet the precise circumstances surrounding her demise remain shrouded in mystery, even as her list of enemies continues to grow. Speaking about her husband, Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), Charity added: "He's been great, but I need to work this out on my own. I can't expect him to come running every time I have a little meltdown," before Vanessa concluded: "Charity, remember, you're not on your own. Do you hear me?" Emmerdale airs weekday nights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
