EastEnders' Joel Return Sparks Fury as Vicki and Ross Face Fallout

Joel Marshall's return to Albert Square has sparked fury among fans and characters alike, as the convicted sex offender shows up on his father Ross Marshall's doorstep following his release from a young offenders unit. The arrival threatens to unravel the fragile peace that Vicki Fowler and Ross have built since Joel's arrest for a series of horrific crimes, including upskirting, filming a sexual assault without consent, and a brutal attack on Vicki herself.

Joel's Dark Past and Crimes

Joel, played by Max Murray, first arrived in Walford from Australia alongside his father Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and stepmother Vicki (Alice Haig). The family had fled after Joel upskirted a schoolmate, with Ross paying $50,000 to avoid prosecution. Once in London, Joel's behaviour escalated: he filmed himself having sex with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) without her consent and uploaded the footage online, terrorised Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), and eventually sexually assaulted a commuter on the London Underground.

The culmination of his crimes came when he attacked Vicki, knocking her unconscious and recording the assault while hurling insults. After his arrest, he initially pleaded innocent, forcing Vicki and Avani to relive their trauma during a trial, before eventually changing his plea to guilty at his father's urging.

Ross and Vicki's Strained Marriage

In the aftermath, Ross and Vicki's relationship crumbled but eventually recovered, leading to an engagement. However, cracks appeared when Vicki learned that Ross intended for Joel to live with them upon his release. Vicki insisted she could never feel safe under the same roof as Joel, forcing Ross to choose between his son and his wife. Ross ultimately agreed that Joel would live with his mother, and the wedding proceeded—after Vicki's brief affair with Zack Hudson (James Farrar) was resolved.

Returning from their honeymoon next week, Vicki and Ross must first deal with Zack living in their house, but he agrees to move out. Just as that issue is settled, Joel arrives on their doorstep with his mother Cleo, who refuses to keep him. Vicki is forced to flee to her sister Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), expressing her horror at the thought of Joel living under her roof.

Fallout and Confrontation

Avani, having heard of Joel's release and not placated by her mother Priya Nandra-Hart's (Sophie Khan-Levy) assurances that he would stay away, heads to confront Vicki alongside Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd). The carnage Joel causes continues to pile up, leaving viewers to wonder what the lasting ramifications of his presence will be.

The storyline has drawn criticism from some viewers for its handling of sensitive topics, but EastEnders continues to explore the impact of sexual violence and its aftermath on victims and families.
