Coronation Street Stars Explain Dance Sequence in Betsy Swain Stroke Storyline
Corrie Stars Explain Dance Sequence for Stroke Storyline

Coronation Street stars Sydney Martin and Liam McCheyne have discussed performing a dance sequence that featured in the ITV soap, as Betsy Swain explained how she may have come to suffer a life-altering stroke. The emotional scenes aired on Wednesday, July 15, showing an ambulance pulling away from No.6, followed by Ryan Connor revealing to a frantic Carla Connor-Swain at the hospital that he had discovered an unconscious Betsy on the kitchen floor.

Stroke Caused by Neck Artery Damage

Carla found her wife, Lisa Connor-Swain, with her daughter, and the pair kept vigil by Betsy's bedside. However, after her condition appeared to stabilise, Betsy suffered a second stroke while being visited by her boyfriend, Dylan Wilson. Doctors confirmed the stroke was caused by a blood clot resulting from neck artery damage due to a temporary loss of circulation. This left Betsy having to tell her mum that Dylan had strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal.

The soap worked closely with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), The Stroke Association, and Safeline. Their experts reviewed scripts and met with the production team and actors to ensure the storyline was portrayed responsibly. In the coming months, viewers will witness Betsy's challenging recovery as she transitions from hospital to home and navigates significant life changes. Corrie says the storyline will highlight the profound physical and emotional impact of a stroke at a young age.

Dance Sequence Visualises Betsy's Aphasia

Following the episode, Corrie stars Sydney and Liam spoke about a dance sequence featured as Betsy tried to explain to her mum what had happened. Because of her expressive aphasia—where someone knows the words they want to say but struggles to say them due to the strokes—the scenes aimed to depict what went on between the pair through movement.

"It's just something new you haven't seen much on soaps at all," Liam shared. Sydney explained it was a moment to "visualise what's in Betsy's brain" as she is "fully coherent" but struggling to find the words. "The writing team came up with the idea that dance is a way to represent something so intimate and innocent at the same time," Sydney said. Liam added: "The way that you tell a story through movement was something we found quite powerful. I think it'll have a huge impact."

Actress Shares Behind-the-Scenes Photos

Following the episode, Sydney took to Instagram with behind-the-scenes photos from the dance sequence. Alongside the post, she wrote: "This one means a lot to me. This is one of the most challenging stories I’ve had the privilege of telling, and I hope it’s a portrayal people connect with. Such a gorgeous, caring & incredibly talented team involved in tonight’s ep!"
