Coronation Street has shared a brief update on soap legend Peter Barlow, but fans are far from satisfied. The character, played by Chris Gascoyne, was mentioned in the Friday July 3 episode by ex-girlfriend Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), who revealed that Peter is now in Europe with his son Simon.
Fans React to Peter Barlow Mention
The brief reference sparked an outpouring of emotion among viewers. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one fan wrote: "Peter mention!" Another commented: "Is he still abroad? He’s not coming back anytime soon, is he?" A third added: "Probably not, I miss him!" while another said: "Same, he needs to come back already."
Peter Barlow's History on the Cobbles
Peter Barlow made his debut in 1965 as the on-screen son of Ken Barlow (William Roache) and Valerie Barlow (Anne Reid), and twin brother to the late Susan (Wendy Jane Walker), who died in a 2001 car crash. After being sent to Glasgow at age five with his sister, Peter returned to Weatherfield in 2000 following a career in the Royal Navy.
During his time on the ITV soap, Peter was involved in numerous dramatic storylines, including his battle with alcoholism, multiple marriages, and the birth of son Simon (Alex Bain). His tumultuous relationship with Carla Connor (Alison King) was marked by infidelity, deceit, addiction, and tragedy.
Peter's 2023 Exit
Peter last appeared on the cobbles in 2023, when he decided to leave for a new life abroad after another split from Carla. Discussing his departure with BBC News, actor Chris Gascoyne admitted: "The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don’t just mean the actors. I’ve known all these people for nearly half my life. I’ve grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I’m not getting any younger."
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
