Gary Windass has landed himself in hot water on Coronation Street and viewers now dread an exit could be looming. The beloved builder, played by Mikey North, joined the ITV soap in 2008 alongside the Windass clan, including mum Anna (Debbie Rush). Over 18 years, he has become a central figure in Weatherfield, involved in major plotlines from romantic entanglements to his PTSD struggle.
Murder Investigation Intensifies
In recent episodes, Gary has been a prime suspect in the murder of Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), who was killed in April after his campaign of harassment against Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) came to light. However, this week it emerged that the actual murderer is Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien), and Gary assisted in concealing the crime.
A flashback revealed that Sarah struck Theo with a metal bar atop scaffolding, causing him to plummet to the ground. Gary was contacted by a frantic Sarah after she discovered Theo was dead, and he helped her hide the crime—a secret they have harboured for weeks.
Fans Fear Prison Exit
Viewers now fear Gary's role in the cover-up could result in a shocking jail exit. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person posted: "Sarah and Gary better not get found out or go to prison, I don't want them to go." Another speculated: "Sarah will land Gary in it I think if she gets caught." A third exclaimed: "No not Gary!" Another pondered: "Unlikely but he might take the wrap? And say it was him!"
Actress Tina O'Brien recently addressed the possibility of Sarah facing jail time, saying: "Yeah, absolutely she could be going to prison this time. If she'd have called the police straight away and explained what happened, she would have been in a much better situation, because it was clearly not premeditated, it was a situation where she felt she had no other choice. But to cover it up, to actively cover something up, she knows that she crossed a line that she can't come back from."
Impact on the Cobbles
Gary's potential exit would mark the end of an 18-year era on Coronation Street. His character has been a fan favourite, and his departure would leave a significant gap in the community. The storyline continues to unfold, with viewers eagerly awaiting the next twist in this gripping murder plot.
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
