Cate Blanchett, the Oscar-winning actor, has pledged to ignite a "creative rumpus" in her newest endeavor as a visiting professor at the University of Oxford.
New Role at Oxford
The Australian star is the latest addition to a distinguished lineup of actors and playwrights appointed as the Cameron Mackintosh visiting professor of contemporary theatre at St Catherine's College, Oxford. The position, covering the 2026-27 academic year, involves delivering lectures and seminars while engaging with students and the broader university community.
Blanchett follows in the footsteps of notable figures such as Stephen Sondheim, Ian McKellen, Arthur Miller, Meera Syal, Tom Stoppard, Adjoa Andoh, Stephen Fry, Diana Rigg, Trevor Nunn, and Deborah Warner. The professorship was established in 1990 through a gift from theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh.

Describing the appointment as an "electrifying opportunity," Blanchett said: "Art breaks down the borders and boundaries of our imagination; it poses questions, and playing with and dissecting it expands and challenges our present reality." Blanchett has starred in numerous critically acclaimed films, including Tár, Carol, Blue Jasmine, Elizabeth, and The Lord of the Rings. She has performed on Broadway and in the West End and served as co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company from 2008 to 2013. Beyond acting, she has guest-edited BBC Radio 4's Today programme, campaigned against leaf blowers, and recently been involved in a planning dispute over her luxury eco-home in Cornwall.
