Former world champion boxer Tony Bellew appeared on ITV's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: Celebrity Special, aiming to win £1 million for Alder Hey Children's Hospital. Hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, the Liverpool native faced a series of general knowledge questions, with his old rival David Haye having previously won £8,000 on the same show.
First Question Stumps Bellew
Jeremy kicked off with what he called "an easy one": "Which of these is a term meaning to socialise with other people, especially those who are deemed important?" The options were digestive, shortbread, ginger nut, and hobnob. Bellew admitted uncertainty, saying, "Ehh, this is a new one. I'm not going to lie, I've never heard of this phrase before." Clarkson then subtly guided him to the correct answer—hobnob—by hiding his mouth behind his hand.
Bellew Jokes About His Intelligence
After the £2,000 question, Jeremy asked if Bellew wanted to set his safety net at £4,000. The boxer declined, explaining, "I can't do that yet. You know what, I'm not going to lie I think I shouldn't really tell you my thinking process out loud because it lets everyone know how stupid I really am." He then quipped to the audience, "I've got an excuse for being stupid, I've been punched in the face for 25 years. You lot have got no excuse like that. You can't get away with it. I've got a great excuse, you haven't. I'm just not the brightest, I'm not the sharpest."
Bellew's Performance Improves
The former champion quickly recovered, correctly answering subsequent questions on topics including which animal is known to hang upside down (bat) and the name of the rapper behind 'U Can't Touch This' (MC Hammer). He progressed through the rounds, aiming to beat Haye's £8,000 winnings.
