BBC Two aired a one-off special titled Millionaire Superyacht: Why Ships Sink on June 22, 2026, examining the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the Sicilian coast two years prior. The tragedy claimed the lives of seven out of 22 people aboard, including British billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.
Who Was Mike Lynch?
Mike Lynch was a British tech entrepreneur often dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates." After completing his PhD at Cambridge University, he co-founded software firm Autonomy in 1996, which pioneered a particular form of artificial intelligence. He later co-founded cybersecurity company Darktrace. At the time of his death, Lynch's net worth was estimated between £852 million and £1.1 billion.
The Legal Battle and Acquittal
According to the BBC, Lynch had been embroiled in a protracted legal battle that led to his extradition to the United States to face fraud allegations. He was acquitted of all charges in June 2024, having faced the prospect of more than two decades in prison.
Tributes and Family
In the wake of his death, friend and associate Andrew Kanter described Lynch as "the most brilliant mind and caring person I have ever known." Kanter added, "His passion for life, knowledge and all those around him was instantly inspiring to everyone he met, and he will be sorely missed."
Lynch's daughter Hannah had just secured a place at Oxford University. Her elder sister Esme described her as "endlessly caring, passionately mad, unintentionally hilarious and the most amazing, supportive and joyful sister and best friend to me... she is my little angel, my star." Lynch shared both daughters with his wife Angela Bacares, who was also on board the Bayesian but survived the disaster.
Lynch and Bacares met around 2000 in New York during an investor meeting, and he asked her out shortly afterwards. They married in 2001 at St Mary's Church in Chelsea.
The Sinking
The tragedy unfolded during severe weather conditions, yet other boats in the vicinity stayed afloat. Another diving vessel, Sea Story, also sank without warning that same year. The documentary explores why the Bayesian went down and examines the circumstances of the sinking.
