The 2026 World Cup is taking centre stage this summer, with millions of viewers across the UK tuning into the action. The BBC and ITV are once again sharing the rights, broadcasting all 104 matches across the US, Canada, and Mexico live and free on TV. Both broadcasters have assembled impressive on-screen talent, featuring stars like Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane offering expert analysis.
BBC's Approach: Staying in Salford
Unlike ITV, the BBC has elected to present games from its immersive studio in Salford until the latter stages of the knockouts, rather than travelling to North America. The decision was made with financial and environmental considerations in mind, aiming to keep costs for the expanded 48-team tournament to a minimum while reducing its carbon footprint.
The BBC’s output is fronted by presenters Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Alex Scott. Cates, Chapman, and Logan replaced Gary Lineker as co-hosts of Match of the Day last year, making this the first major men’s international tournament since 2002 without Lineker on presenting duties. Gabby Logan is expected to present the World Cup final, becoming the first woman to host the BBC’s coverage of the biggest game in men’s football.
BBC's Punditry and Commentary Teams
Shearer, Rooney, and Micah Richards are joined by England legends Joe Hart, Steph Houghton, and Ellen White. International perspective comes from Olivier Giroud, Gael Clichy, and Cesar Azpilicueta, while former Brentford and Tottenham manager Thomas Frank adds extra expertise. The commentary team includes Guy Mowbray (lead commentator for England games), Steve Wilson, Steve Bower, and Jonathan Pearce. Mowbray works alongside Shearer as co-commentator for England matches.
After England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia, Shearer praised Thomas Tuchel’s decision to start Jude Bellingham over Morgan Rogers: 'Well, you can have the discussion – Jude Bellingham or Morgan Rogers – but the manager has made the right one because he has come up with something like that.' He added: 'He sees the spot, has a look there, knows where he wants to put it and guides it in there. It was a great finish and great start to the second half for England.'

ITV, in contrast, is based in Brooklyn, New York, for the tournament’s duration, with a studio boasting views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. Their coverage is fronted by the popular duo of Mark Pougatch and Laura Woods. Neville and Keane are the standout pundits, alongside Ian Wright, Patrick Vieira, and Karen Carney.
Neville discussed England’s clash with Ghana and suggested Tuchel refresh his starting XI with Marc Guehi and Djed Spence. 'Ghana have got Antoine Semenyo, Brandon Thomas-Asante, players who can play one-vs-one, who are mobile,' Neville said. 'So I do think Guehi coming in makes sense, and maybe Djed Spence as well. I thought Spence was excellent when he came on against Croatia. I don’t think John Stones will play every single game, every three or four days.'
