Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and director Denis Villeneuve took to the stage at CinemaCon on Tuesday night to unveil the first seven minutes of Dune: Part Three. The event began with a live performance by a Fremen army, some ascending on wires, before Villeneuve jokingly referred to them as his 'entourage'.
The footage opened with Fremen ships sailing through dark, grey, foggy air before crashing onto a rain-soaked planet. Chants of 'God be with us' preceded a battle where lasers obliterated many. The clip then shifted to a wider preview, showing Momoa's Duncan Idaho telling Chalamet's Paul Atreides that he is 'way beyond redemption' after becoming a destroyer of worlds.
Villeneuve described the third and final film in his trilogy as 'a thriller — action-packed, more intense and definitely more emotional'. He noted that the story takes place 17 years later in a 'very different world' where Paul's 'nightmares became reality', forcing him to grapple with the consequences of his decisions. The film, he said, is 'a redemption story', but at its heart remains 'that love story between Chani and Paul, albeit more of a broken love story'.
Chalamet echoed this, stating that Paul has 'become his worst vision and he's struggling to figure out how to protect those he loves while becoming the all-powerful dark emperor of the universe'. Zendaya added that the years have not been kind to anyone in Dune, describing 'a really difficult, challenging, ungentle and unkind few years', though there remains 'so much left still to fight for'. She revealed that her character Chani is now 'at a very different place in her life where that youthful outlook is completely gone'.
Momoa's return was explained through Ghola technology, despite his character's death in Dune: Part One. Villeneuve told the crowd it was 'emotional to say farewell to Paul and Chani in the desert', noting that the cast and crew had become 'like a small family' over nearly ten years. Chalamet concluded by calling Villeneuve 'the one … the real Paul Atreides'. Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release on 18 December.
