Young Sherlock has been renewed for a second season, with the returning cast confirmed for the detective drama. Hero Fiennes Tiffin will reprise his role as the young detective, having starred in the first season that aired in March.
The British mystery series was created by Matthew Parkhill and developed by Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie, who also directed two episodes. It draws inspiration from Andrew Lane's Young Sherlock Holmes book series, which itself was a pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes stories.
Season 2 returning cast
Joining Fiennes Tiffin in the second season are Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, Natascha McElhone as Sherlock's mother Cordelia, Max Irons as brother Mycroft and Holly Cattle as sister Beatrice. Details about new cast additions' characters are not being revealed.
Plot synopsis
The series synopsis reads: "As a 19-year-old at Oxford University, Sherlock Holmes is not yet the master detective he grows up to be. He is raw and unfiltered, and he lacks discipline. A murder at Oxford puts Holmes's freedom at risk, and he sets out to solve his first murder mystery that leads him to a global-level conspiracy."
Critical reception
Young Sherlock received praise upon its release, reflected in its 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the reviewing platform reads: "Young Sherlock doesn't aim to recreate Conan Doyle's work; rather, it takes pride in its liberal adaptation, delivering Guy Ritchie's signature blend of precise entertainment, sly style, and ingratiating characters."
One critic said: "Prime Video’s “Young Sherlock” is sensational. The series, which was adapted by Matthew Parkhill, remixes the beloved figure to deliver all the traits fans know and love -- with more than one twist."
Fan response
Fans have responded positively as well. A fan said: "I am excited to see what they do with young Sherlock!! Having a fresh take on the relationship between the two boys has me on the edge of my seat."
"Great chemistry between the lead actors with the pace, excitement and wit you can expect from Guy Ritchie. If you love Ritchie’s stuff you’ll love this," added a second. On IMDb, many people recalled it as being one of the "best series of the year".
Young Sherlock is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.
