Fans of All Creatures Great and Small can now enjoy a prequel series, Young James Herriot, which originally aired on BBC One in 2011 and follows the beloved vet's early career in Glasgow before his move to Yorkshire.

The three-part miniseries, set in 1933, documents James Herriot's time as a student at Glasgow Veterinary College, before he arrived at Skeldale House to work with Siegfried Farnon. Based on the early works of veterinary surgeon James Herriot, the series shows him falling on hard times after being ripped off for lodging, but he soon becomes involved in caring for sick farm animals and a kennel of dogs.
Despite his initial struggles, his passion for veterinary medicine remains undimmed. The lead role is played by Iain De Caestecker, known to soap fans as Coronation Street's Adam Barlow (2001-2003), and also starred in Monarch of the Glen, Taggart, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and The Winter King.
Fan Reactions and Availability
Although the BBC did not commission further seasons after the first episode attracted 6 million viewers, fans have expressed their appreciation. On IMDb, one viewer called it "A wonderful adaptation!" and praised the comforting nature of BBC miniseries. Another added, "I loved the old series and this new one, too," while a third noted the interesting influences in Herriot's life, rating it 8 out of 10.
Young James Herriot is available to stream on Prime Video, while All Creatures Great and Small continues on Channel 5.
