The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Jack Shepherd, the esteemed British actor best known for portraying Detective Charles Wycliffe, who has died at the age of 85.

Jack Shepherd passed away peacefully in hospital on Monday, 24th November 2025, following what his family described as a short illness. His wife and children were by his side at the time of his passing.
The Leeds-born star captivated television audiences for years as the titular Cornish detective in the popular ITV series, Wycliffe.
A Distinguished and Varied Career
Shepherd's portrayal of the thoughtful detective, leading investigations into murders across Cornwall, made him a household name. The series, which was based on the novels of W.J. Burley, aired on ITV from 1993 until 1998.
His acclaimed career, however, stretched far beyond the confines of that one role. In the 1970s, his powerful performance as the rebellious Labour MP Bill Brand earned him a BAFTA nomination.
Shepherd was also a formidable stage presence, winning an Olivier Award for his work in the 1983 production of Glengarry Glen Ross.
His talents extended to film, with an appearance in the 2007 movie The Golden Compass. Away from acting, Shepherd was a skilled playwright and an accomplished musician, playing both the saxophone and jazz piano.
