Twelve years after the original series concluded, Disney Channel is launching a sequel titled 'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place'. The new show follows Justin Russo, reprised by David Henrie, who now lives on Staten Island with his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and their sons Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). Although Justin retains his magical abilities, he has abandoned the wizarding world, and his family remains unaware of his powers.
The narrative shifts when a rebellious 12-year-old wizard named Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, arrives at the Russo home on Justin's 34th birthday. Selena Gomez reprises her role as Alex Russo, who appears unexpectedly to seek Justin's help. The premiere sets the stage for a comedic and heartwarming tale as the family adjusts to Billie's presence while Justin grapples with his past.
The series benefits from significant advancements in special effects technology since the original aired 17 years ago, resulting in a more polished and fantastical depiction of magic. A Halloween-themed episode titled 'Something Wizard This Way Comes' introduces traditions like gristletoe and the menacing Pumpkin Belly.
While the show pays homage to its predecessor, it carves out its own identity with new storylines for a new generation. Themes of family, responsibility and self-acceptance remain central, anchored by Billie's journey.
