Why is Casualty not on today? Summer break return date

Casualty fans are about to spend several weekends without their usual Saturday night visit to Holby City Hospital, as the BBC One medical drama has gone off air after airing the final instalment of its latest boxset, Lethal Legacy, last Saturday.

The mini-series wrapped up storylines that explored Flynn Byron’s army past, Dylan Keogh’s relationships with son Matty Linlaker and friend Stevie Nash, and Rash Masum’s long-awaited promotion to consultant. Rida Amaan also came to terms with her alopecia diagnosis, supported by friend and colleague Jodie Whyte, who turned detective to investigate a local housing development.

What does the 40th anniversary return have in store?

When the show returns, it will celebrate 40 years on air with a special double-bill. The anniversary event centres on a high-stakes major incident that throws Holby into chaos, with lives hanging in the balance and the emergency department team pushed to their absolute limits.

A major rescue operation unfolds, forcing impossible life-or-death decisions and testing the courage, resilience and leadership of those at the heart of the hospital. The special brings together some of the show’s most beloved characters in a tense and emotionally charged story.
