Netflix's hit series Wednesday has moved filming for its second season from Romania to Ireland, with production designer Mark Scruton revealing the country quickly became the 'frontrunner' for the new location. The show, centred on Wednesday Addams at Nevermore Academy, originally shot in Romania despite being set in Vermont, US.
Speaking to Screen Time, Scruton said the team spent a long time deciding where to base season two. 'I spent a long time scouting Ireland before we made the final choice,' he explained. 'Myself and Karen [Richards], the producer, and the location scout spent around two weeks driving around, just getting a feel for the place.'
The designer noted the challenge of maintaining the visual continuity from Romania, which had established a specific look for the fictional Vermont school. 'Romania had given us a look that we had to follow through with, we couldn't just abandon that and do something different,' he said. 'We had to build a lot of the stuff that were locations before and to copy sets that had been built and long destroyed.'
Scruton also discussed the increased pressure following the debut series' success. 'First time around, no one really knew about the show... we were quietly doing our thing in Romania. This year it was sort of 100 miles per hour... we were much bigger in scale this year which does put the pressure on hugely,' he added.
Netflix has already greenlit a third season of Wednesday, and Scruton hinted at a possible return to Ireland, stating, 'All I know is we left a lot of things standing in Ireland so they're all still there so hopefully they won't get wasted.'
