Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1990s films, has shared her thoughts on Jenna Ortega's portrayal of the character in Netflix's upcoming series Wednesday. The two stars discussed the show for Interview Magazine, with Ricci praising Ortega's fresh take on the iconic role.
Ricci, who appears in the new series as Marylin Thornhill, said of Ortega's look: 'There are a lot of nice goth nods without it being over-the-top. When I saw pictures of you, I was like, 'Oh, wow. It's such a great, modern interpretation'. She also noted details such as the character wearing trousers and creepers, calling them 'so good'.
Ortega recalled first seeing the 1990s Addams Family films at the age of eight or nine, saying she 'loved them' and could 'watch them over and over'. The actor, who previously appeared in Netflix's You, added that she relates to Wednesday's dry sense of humour and considered being compared to the character 'the greatest honour'.
Co-created by Tim Burton, Wednesday follows the teenage Wednesday Addams as she attends Nevermore Academy, a boarding school where she investigates local murders and navigates family relationships. The series also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and is set to premiere on Netflix next month.
