Vince Gilligan has delivered a disappointing update for fans of Apple TV sci-fi drama Pluribus, confirming that the second season will not arrive swiftly despite the first series ending on a major cliffhanger.
Speaking at Apple TV's 2026 press day on Tuesday 3 February, the Breaking Bad creator said he and his writing team were "plugging away" on the new episodes, but warned that patience would be required. "We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out," he said.
Gilligan drew a contrast with shows such as The Pitt, which returns annually, and the old-school approach of The X-Files, which came back the same month every year. "It ain't gonna be The Pitt," he said. "We'll come back the same month – just the question is what year."
Given that season 1 debuted in November 2025, a similar release window means the earliest possible return for season 2 would be November 2027, and it could slip to 2028. That would mirror the extended gap between the first two seasons of fellow Apple TV sci-fi series Severance.
Gilligan, who previously said he has "a pretty good idea of where it should end" for the show, has also hinted that Pluribus could continue beyond its already-confirmed two-season run. "If we come up with a better way to end this thing, we will," he said.
