Vigil reached its series three conclusion on Monday night, and fans were quick to demand a fourth series of the popular BBC detective drama.
The show stars Suranne Jones as DCI Amy Silva and Rose Leslie as DI Kirsten Longacre. The third series centred on the killing of a British national in the Arctic, prompting the duo to launch an investigation that led to shocking discoveries.
Finale brings peril and a difficult decision
Following five episodes brimming with tension, Monday evening delivered the series conclusion as Amy and Kirsten travelled back to Scotland, only to find peril pursuing them.
Simultaneously, Amy discovered herself on the opposite side of justice, while Kirsten placed herself at risk to protect Amy and uncover the truth despite facing enormous political strain and personal threat. As the series ended, the pair confronted the most difficult decision of their professional lives.
Aftermath and resignation
Following Sir Ian Downing's detention and politician Gordon Laity's downfall, Shen Jia was ultimately secure and capable of presenting her research publicly. Yet it proved devastating news for Amy as she confronted serious consequences for declining to surrender Shen Jia to officials.
Addressing her superior, the duo concluded that it would be best for her to resign in order to avoid prison or an investigation. An emotional Kirsten remarked: "A wise colleague of mine once told me to never make this job personal" to which Amy insisted she has no regrets before departing hand-in-hand with Kirsten.
Fans demand a fourth series
Following the finale, viewers wasted no time taking to Twitter, now X, to voice their opinions, with many clamouring for a fourth series.
Only recently, creator Tom Edge teased whether viewers could see the duo return for a fourth series. Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, the writer said: "I think certainly this time around, we put the show in a place where we feel that this arc across three seasons has been settled.
"I think we will see how it goes. But one of the pleasures of the show is it doesn't feel like it is a show that has to return on an annual ticking clock basis. So I think we can leave it open, but certainly for this season, it felt like it was the culmination of a bunch of questions that we've asked across three seasons. I was happy to take it to that point."
