Vigil returned to BBC One on Sunday, August 30, with a six-part series starring Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre. This time, Kirsten leads the investigation, travelling to Svalbard, Norway, to examine the fatal shooting of a British soldier. Meanwhile, Amy, heading the case in Scotland, suffers injuries from a laboratory explosion, and a politician is kidnapped.

When the first series aired five years ago, the drama was set on the submarine HMS Vigil, with the second series taking place in the Middle East. The new series follows Kirsten and Amy as they investigate the mysterious circumstances in Svalbard.
