BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay almost made a major on-air blunder while discussing the new series of Celebrity Traitors, but he insisted it wasn't his fault as he feared receiving "loads of complaints" from listeners.
During Tuesday's (October 6) episode of his show, Vernon and his team were chatting about the celebrity reality programme, which launched last week. Among the famous faces taking part are Withnail and I actor Richard E Grant, former EastEnders star Ross Kemp, presenter Maya Jama and comedian Miranda Hart.
Near-spoiler moment
With only two episodes aired, one celebrity has already left the show. Vernon nearly gave the game away when he asked his team: "Has anyone left The Traitors castle yet?"
His colleague Ellie Brennan replied: "Not yet, but we mustn't do spoilers." Producer Phil McGarvey then said: "Someone has left The Traitors castle. Catch up on iPlayer."
Vernon, 52, was relieved he hadn't revealed any spoilers, saying: "Good job the mic was down then. Good job I was quick on the fade, we would have loads and loads of complaints on the texts. Well done pal."
'It's not my fault'
His producer then admitted he had forgotten what had happened despite there being only two episodes. Vernon promised he wouldn't ruin the show for viewers who haven't caught up yet.
He said: "Right, chill. It's not my fault people don't get it within 24 hours. When was it last on?" Ellie told him it was last Friday, to which Vernon responded: "Well, you've had lots of time. I won't spoil it. I won't spoil it. What a show."
The near-miss comes after Vernon shouted "why would you do that" at his co-star following a blunder live on air during a previous show.
Previous on-air moment
On Thursday (October 1), he paid tribute to his team while speaking to Ellie, saying: "That's how tight we are as a team. We have the confidence to communicate in such a manner with each other.
"Some people said that this show is just organic because we don't have a script and it really is. It's audio manure, that's what we are. We flourish we fertilise. We just come up with ideas. We're so organic."
After the comment, Vernon and his team fell into laughter, and he joked as he tried to move on with the show: "I think someone spiked the air conditioning. Here's Noel Gallagher with all the details that you need to come [silence] the top."
The sudden blip raised alarms with Ellie, who asked jokingly: "Did you just put the microphone down mid talking?" Vernon, realising his blunder, rebutted light-heartedly about the 'rules of radio': "Why would you do that? Rule number one in radio.
"Rule number one in radio alright. Brennan you've been in radio a while, you should know this one. Whenever there's a blip, ok, blame it on someone going through a tunnel."
The next episode of Celebrity Traitors airs tomorrow (Thursday, October 8) from 8pm to 9.05pm on BBC One.
