Vernon Kay has apologised to The One Show co-host Alex Jones after mistakenly calling her 'Alec' during a live broadcast. The incident occurred on Monday 27 July as the duo returned from a summer break ahead of the show's 20th anniversary.
On-Air Error Sparks Apology
Seconds into the programme, Vernon accidentally referred to Alex as 'Alec' before immediately correcting himself. The error was raised on his BBC Radio 2 show the following day after a listener named Kev asked: 'I was watching The One Show last night — who on earth is Alec Jones?'
Laughing, Vernon replied: 'Can you believe it? I got her name wrong, live on the BBC. Sorry Alex - hilarious.'
Light-Hearted Recovery and Anniversary Tease
Despite the early wobble, the presenters continued the episode and hinted at 'exciting' plans for the milestone anniversary, promising the return of familiar faces. Later, Vernon poked fun at himself by deliberately stressing Alex's name. 'Yes, Alex,' she replied, prompting a chuckle as she previewed the night's show.
Guests and Tribute to Bill Oddie
The programme's guests included The Odyssey actress Samantha Morton and Fake or Fortune's Fiona Bruce and Phillip Mould. Before wrapping up, the hosts paid tribute to Bill Oddie following news of his death at age 85. Vernon told viewers: 'Before we go, we were sad to hear of the death of Bill Oddie today, someone who appeared on The One Show many times. As well as starring in The Goodies, Bill also went on to present Springwatch. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.'
Bill's agent David Foster announced his death earlier in the day, saying: 'It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Bill Oddie, the country's best-loved birder. Bill was a multi-talented celebrity – wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, songwriter, musician and conservationist. Yet it was never fame that he valued. Instead he encouraged us to respect and protect the environment.' He added that Oddie 'taught us the wonder of' the environment and 'protested, lobbied and campaigned for it.'
