Van Der Valk Season 4: Marc Warren Returns to ITV Tonight

Van Der Valk returns to ITV tonight for its fourth season, with Marc Warren reprising his role as the title detective in the Amsterdam-set crime drama that fans have called "one of the best police procedurals on TV".

The series, based on Nicolas Freeling's crime thriller of the same name, first arrived on ITV in 2020. This season, Piet Van Der Valk takes on three more homicide cases as he races to solve them.

A new season with three cases

Writer Chris Murray said of the upcoming episodes: "We are 100% sure that this is the best series of Van Der Valk we've done so far. Three strong, contrasting, resolving films flooded with our distinctive team dynamic but this time with the added spice of Piet's combative ex-girlfriend turning up at the same time as one of our team has to confront their own mortality."

Maimie McCoy returns as Inspecteur Lucienne Hassell, Azan Ahmed plays Sergeant Eddie Suleman, Darrell D'Silva reprises his role as team pathologist Hendrik Davie, and Emma Fielding stars as Chief Commissaris Julia Dahlman.

Praise from fans

Shot and set in Amsterdam, the programme is inspired by the original series that ran from 1972 to 1992. The Mirror reports that the latest episodes promise to deliver the most dramatic storylines to date.

Viewers have heaped praise on the remake. One fan wrote: "I look back fondly on the original series but found this remake more convincing as it’s set in contemporary times. Marc Warren is great as the taciturn VdV and he’s supported by a strong cast." Another called it "brilliant", while a third added: "Marc Warren was fabulous and the rest of the cast were engaged."

Others have described the show as "gritty and compelling" and "Driven. Gutsy TV. Great cop duo." One viewer wrote: "All the episodes kept my attention and were thrilling," while another called it an "Entertaining contemporary take on a classic crime drama."

When to watch

Van Der Valk returns to ITV on Sunday at 9pm.
