Marc Warren returns as the titular detective in Van Der Valk season four, which launches this evening on ITV. The new series sees him face three more complex murder investigations, while also helping a member of his team who is worried about their "mortality" and dealing with the return of a "past romance".
Warren is joined by Emma Fielding as Julia Dahlman, Maimie McCoy as Lucienne Hassell and Darrell D'Silva as Hendrik Davie. Kim Riedle appears as newcomer Kalie Tenkers.
Where was Van Der Valk season four filmed?
As with the previous three series, filming for Van Der Valk season four was primarily based in Amsterdam. One of the most frequently used locations is Cafe Scheltema, where the detectives gather to discuss their cases.
Other notable Amsterdam locations include the Amstel River and the Canal Belts, a historic 14km network of waterways known locally as the Grachtengordel. Filming has also taken place around the Baruch Spinoza statue, the NDSM wharf, the Muziekgebouw concert hall and the Rijksmuseum.
Why Cafe Scheltema is central to the show
The cafe has become a recurring setting across the series. Writer Chris Murray previously explained to iNews that it was a deliberate choice, remarking: "We try not to be a typical police procedural, so this is their unofficial HQ. It’s a very characterful, atmospheric cafe."
Beyond Amsterdam
Murray said: "Amsterdam is quite difficult to film in." He explained: "The canal-lined streets are quite narrow, and it’s hard to get permission to get a production crew in for long, so we look further afield to find places that are more accessible."
Because of those challenges, scenes are also shot in nearby cities, including The Hague and Utrecht.
