ITV viewers have made their feelings clear after Van der Valk wrapped up its fourth series, with many calling for the Amsterdam detective drama to make a comeback. The latest run consisted of just three episodes, but the short series has left an impression on viewers.
Following Sunday's dramatic finale, fans took to social media to question why they had been given such a brief return after waiting three years for the show to come back.
Series Background and Finale
The crime drama, starring Marc Warren as Dutch detective Piet Van der Valk, returned to ITV recently after a lengthy absence. The modern series is a reboot of the original programme, which aired between 1972 and 1992 and was inspired by Nicolas Freeling's novels.
Set against the backdrop of Amsterdam, the series follows Van der Valk and his colleagues as they investigate some of the Dutch capital's most complex and dangerous crimes.
The fourth series ended with a particularly high-stakes case. In the final episode, a scientist working on a possible breakthrough in cancer treatment is discovered dead, with investigators believing he was deliberately assassinated. Van der Valk and his team are then drawn into a mystery involving pharmaceutical billionaire Freddie Klink.
Fan Reaction and Demand for More
As the investigation develops, the detectives discover that the murdered scientist may have concealed an important discovery. The team must decipher a cryptic code while attempting to stay ahead of people who are also desperate to get hold of the research.
But while the case may have reached its conclusion, viewers are now looking beyond the finale and asking a bigger question: when will Van der Valk be back? The reaction from fans was largely focused on the same issue – they simply want more episodes.
One viewer posted: “We need longer series. I never got the three episode series. That's a mini series. #VanDerValk” A third viewer directly asked ITV whether another series was on the way, while another fan praised the programme and its characters before calling for “more” episodes.
Cast Hints and Future Uncertainty
The demand comes despite the fact that there has been no confirmed fifth series at this stage. Marc explained that the latest series felt like a much bigger production, with stronger scripts, a larger crew. He added that the new run felt like the culmination of everything the cast and crew had learned over the previous three years.
According to him, the team had also grown much closer, describing them as “much more of a family”. He also hinted at the show’s future, saying: “We don’t know. It’s been out over the world, it’s got American, German, Dutch money and some money from ITV.
“What one would hope is that it is as well received and watched as it always has been. It’s always done with really lovely figures, and I would love to do it again.” Van der Valk is available to stream on ITVX.
