Van der Valk fans demand fifth season after dramatic finale

ITV's crime drama Van der Valk has concluded its fourth season, and fans are already urging the broadcaster to renew the Amsterdam-set series for a fifth. The three-part season aired its final episode on Sunday, August 16, ending with a shocking twist.

A Dramatic Finale

In the closing episode, a scientist researching a potential breakthrough in cancer treatment is found dead, apparently assassinated by a professional killer. The episode synopsis read: “Piet has to discover why he was killed and what the possible link is to pharmaceuticals billionaire Freddie Klink.”

It continued: “Realising that the scientist possibly hid a breakthrough discovery, the team must crack a cryptic code to retrieve it and fend off the murderous efforts of other parties equally interested in getting their hands on it.”

Fans Call for More Episodes

With the future of the show uncertain, viewers have expressed disappointment over the short run. One wrote: “We need longer series. I never got the three episode series. That's a mini series. #VanDerValk” Another commented: “Can't leave #VanDerValk there.” A third asked: “Will we get more #VanDerValk @ITV?”

Another fan said: “Absolutely loved #VanderValk. All series need more please @ITVX. Love all the characters.”

Marc Warren's Hopes for Season 5

Lead actor Marc Warren, who plays Piet Van der Valk, has previously expressed his desire to return. Speaking to Radio Times, he said: “It's always had good viewing figures, it's always been very well received... and I'd love to do more of it because it's a treat. I can't imagine another job like this coming along. So when it's gone, it's gone – and I'm not ready for it to go.”

However, Warren acknowledged that the decision is not in the cast's hands. “These things are out of our control – you just go with however it is,” he said. “But the will and the passion are certainly there, and why wouldn't they be? It's a joy to do, and I think it's a joy to watch. People who are fans of the show just love it. There's something about it, so it'd be a real shame not to do it again.”

He added: “And I think people, when they finish this series, will want to know what's going on because there is something quite obviously going on. They'll want a resolution to it, which is why we need to do season 5.” Van der Valk is available to stream on ITVX.
