The Undeclared War season two airs its finale tonight, leaving viewers to ponder the possibility of a third season. The cyber-thriller, featuring Simon Pegg, Sian Brooke, Hannah Khalique-Brown, Alex Jennings, Danny Sapani, Ed Stoppard, and Chloe Pirrie, returned to screens last month after a four-year gap.
Series Background
The show, which follows a GCHQ analyst team covertly working to prevent cyber-attacks on the UK post-pandemic, first premiered in 2022. The first season ended on a major cliffhanger, with satellite imagery showing an unidentified aircraft entering British airspace. Season two picked up directly from that point, with the Malware Department at GCHQ dealing with the aftermath of a massive Russian cyber-attack.
Season Two Focus
Unlike the first series, season two delved into the personal lives of the characters, introducing Sian Brooke as Barbara Patrick, wife of GCHQ's Head of Operations, Danny Patrick, played by Simon Pegg. Channel 4 said: "Their relationship forms the emotional backbone of the story as each contend with huge personal and professional conflicts which take them on a collision course."
Lead writer Colin Teevan explained the shift: "Second, third and fourth series are always interesting because audiences want two things at once: they want something familiar, but they also want something new. That becomes part of the challenge. You can't simply repeat what you've done before, but you also can't abandon everything that made the original work. For me, it became a kind of chess game. There were cliffhangers from the first series that needed to be resolved, but those resolutions also had to evolve into an entirely new story. The challenge was finding a way to honour what had come before while taking the characters and the audience somewhere unexpected."
Season Three Prospects
Channel 4 has not confirmed a third season, but the cast have hinted at discussions. Speaking to RadioTimes, Simon Pegg said: "I’ve had a couple of conversations with the writer about where we could go next, in terms of what the status quo is at the end of the series. Obeviously, everything’s changed." This likely refers to his character's relationship with his wife, Barbara, after she was revealed as the mole in season two.
Hannah Khalique-Brown, who played Saara Parvin, added: "There are definitely options and plot lines that could be explored. The scope is there, for sure. Whether or not it happens, we don’t know."
Expanding the World
Teevan also discussed how the series has evolved, potentially setting up more stories: "One of the key differences is perspective. Series one was very much Saara's story. Through her, we discovered this hidden world and learned how it operates. Series two shifts the focus towards Danny, who sits at the centre of decision-making. That change alone gives the story a very different feel. The first series was largely about introducing audiences to this world and establishing its rules. Series two takes that world and presents it with a completely new challenge, both internally and externally. It also expands the scope of the story, exploring the connections between GCHQ, politics, government and other agencies." He added: "One of the advantages of returning to a story is that you can deepen characters and relationships that were only hinted at previously. We had the opportunity to explore those layers in much greater depth this time around."
Given that season two was only confirmed three years after the first aired and broadcast four years later, any potential third season might take time. Both seasons of The Undeclared War are available to stream on Channel 4.
