Sluts Hole Lane in Norfolk, Butthole Lane in Leicestershire and Bell End in Rowley Regis have been named among the UK's rudest place names in a new survey. More than half of Britons believe the country boasts some of the most amusing road and village names globally, though they can also prove a hazard for motorists.
Risqué signs distract two-thirds of drivers
Risqué road names have distracted two thirds of drivers, with six in 10 missing their turning or exit because they were laughing and one in three nearly causing a collision. The research was commissioned by Asda Money, which has temporarily installed "modesty" curtains over signs to help keep drivers focused on the road.
Nearly one in three (29%) have even cited a humorous place name as justification for visiting a location, reports the Daily Star. The initiative comes as Asda Money prepares to launch its new car insurance this month in partnership with Allianz.
Other distractions on the road
Yet amusing road names represent just one of the distractions vying for drivers' attention. In total, 76% confess they become distracted while driving, experiencing this an average of five times during a one-hour journey.
Beyond road signs, chatty passengers (32%), breathtaking scenery (30%), passengers repeatedly pointing things out (27%), yawning or fatigue (26%) and singing along to the radio (25%) all feature on the list.
Asda Money responds with modesty curtains
