TV Tonight: Brenda Blethyn Stars in A Woman of Substance Drama

Channel 4 airs a new adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's novel A Woman of Substance at 9pm. Brenda Blethyn plays Emma Harte, the richest woman in the world, who reflects on her life from her New York penthouse. The story begins in early 20th-century Yorkshire, where she worked as a maid. After her mother's deathbed advice to chase her dreams, Emma vows never to be poor again. Jessica Reynolds portrays the younger Emma, with a cast including Emmett J Scanlan and Lenny Rush.

At 8pm on Channel 5, Barts: A Hospital at War explores the oldest hospital in Britain still on its original site. Alice traces the pharmacy's history from the Great Plague of 1665 to modern robotic arms, and examines plastic surgery techniques developed for first world war soldiers.

BBC One's Ambulance at 9pm follows a long night for Yorkshire's ambulance service, with crew members facing violent patients and an elderly woman impaled on her walking frame, while a call handler deals with an abusive 999 caller.
